Our 9th Grade Curriculum Choices

High school!  Already!!

It seems like it was just yesterday that I told myself we have plenty of time to prepare for high school no need to rush.  Ha!  High school  came faster than I could imagine!  So, now that we are three months in, and have worked out most of the kinks, I thought I'd share what my daughter is using for 9th grade.  As of now she plans to go to college because she wants to be a veterinarian or midwife (I know two totally different careers).  Therefore, we planned her four year high school outline around that.  If you all would like me to post how we did that, let me know.

She is using My Father's World Ancient History & Literature, for Bible, History, and English.  This will give her three credits.  We have been using MFW for 3 years now and absolutely love it!  They use a Charlotte Mason, Classical, and Unit study approach, which is, why our family love it!  We use different approaches to make it work for us, so this is why it's perfect for us.  Although, English is included in MFW we have chosen to beef it up some with some extra language arts components.  We are  adding Wordly Wise 3000 book 9 for some extra vocabulary, and  Easy Grammar for extra grammar practice.  I really want her to develop a love for writing so we will be working slowly through Writeshop I.  If you follow me on Instagram you know that we were using IEW's writing curriculum, but it just wasn't working as well as I thought it would, so we switched to Writeshop I which has a much more gentle approach to writing.  It works well with my younger children so we thought we would give it a try for her.  For science she is using Apologia's Physical Science.  This will be worth 1 credit in science.  This is another family favorite because it teaches science from a creation stand point and leaves out the fluff, which is, important to our family.  The notebook method is brilliant, it helps my daughter retain the information she read, study, and helps her to keep her work organized.

She is using Harold Jacob's Elementary Algebra for Math.  This will give her one credit in Algebra I.  This is our first time using this curriculum so I don't have  a lot to say  about it just, yet, but, I will keep you all posted as we go through it.  So far so good, though!

Ok, on to her electives.  She plays the hand bells and is apart of a bell choir and she also plays the violin.  She will receive 1 credit in fine arts for the time she practice and concerts she performs in.  Another curriculum we chose, which is, recommended by MFW, is The Fallacy Dectective and The Thinking Toolbox.  This will get her a half of a credit in Logic.

She's also taking a veterinarian science class through our local 4-H, volunteering at teen court, and at a local nursing home.  This is a busy year for this girly, but she is gliding right through it and making daddy and I proud!  She will have a total of 6.5 credits or 7.5 (depending on how writing goes) when this school year is over.  I will be posting a more in depth review of all the curriculum listed here throughout our school year, so be sure to check back periodically.  So I'm curious and woud love to know what you are using for your 9th grader!

  1. Thanks for sharing how you are planning for 9th grade. It sounds like you all are having a great year so far.

We enjoy Writeshop for writing too. IEW didn't fit as well although I do like their Fix It grammar.

Looking forward to reading more of your posts.

    1. I looked at the Fix It Grammar and I'm considering using it for my younger kiddos.
